Inspired by a visit to Southern Japan a few years ago, this piece has taken over 4 months to complete (Dimensions are roughly 1m x 1.5m... it's almost as tall as me!).
Never again will I attempt a project so physically huge. It's taken 3 or 4 attempts but finally I'm happy to hang this one on the wall.
I've tried to capture the movement of the koi through both the guilding outlines and background, whilst trying to keep an asian feel to the whole piece... in Japan these fish are absolutely everywhere in the river system.
Acrylic and guilding on Canvas. The guilding paper is offcuts of both silver and gold.

I like the simple background of circles, each the same, yet slighty different. It creates a very nice texture.
But I really like the flames (thats what I think they are...), they look awesome!
The dark red and black silhouettes, the bright gold shimmers coming from them, the shape and position of them, it looks beautiful.
Come to think about it, they look like carp (the fish, not a typo) in a pond.
A pond on fire.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
